Basically, pipes are better as you DON'T inhale the smoke. You can't. It is too harsh. So the smoke doesn't enter your lungs (some of it probably leaks through but not as much as cigarette smoke, which paints on your lungs) So with a pipe, your lungs start to live again - seriously. And your not only start smelling stuff again, your sense of smell actually gets keener. The problem is, there is a steep learning curve that not many people have the patience to follow. The reward is a lot less dependency on nicotine, healthier lungs and a more relaxed attitude. Hmm.. I think I should write a couple of posts about it afterall. That is exactly how the world works and a lot of 'maulanas' get away with saying and preaching things that they can not defend if inquired seriously and passionately. I draw (your average doodler, you can say :) ) so for me, passing this off was not an option. And unfortunately, a lot of people do know these things, but have never dared to question them. You are right, practically all 'renowned' Islamic scholars have called drawing, pictures (of faces) etc 'haraam'. They also think photography is haraam. And so is video. But there is dispute there, some saying that photography is not really drawing, and video not really a single photograph and the list of itsy bitsy tiny miny differences go on and on and on and on and on...and on... The short version can be that to declare something forbidden, there is no single explicit order to be found in Quran, Sunnah or Hadeeth. This concept of not drawing is a result of the interpretations of certain Ahaadeeth.
