There is just too much information out there on “how to get traffic, buy traffic, SEO this, search engine that, social media campaign, social media outreach, Facebook pages, Google + profiles, Twitter followers and LinkedIn marketing”. And that’s just for starters.
You do not need large amounts of traffic if it doesn’t do what you want it to.
You need to focus.
It is not about making your website famous, it is about making your website effective.
Write down, “what are you selling on your website?”
If you are not selling anything, then ask yourself, “why do I have a website?”
The answer should typically be a one-liner. No complications, and hopefully, not too many qualifiers.
Whatever is the main, essential reason for the existence of your website or blog, that is what you are selling.
Now, from that reason comes the action you want your website visitors to take.
- You may want your website visitors to buy your eBook(s)
- You may want your website visitors to sign up for your email list
- You may want your website visitors to buy shoes, jackets or jewelry
The required action should again be written down simply.
Once you have the required action(s) all written down and thrashed out, you then figure out the call to action.
People do not and will not intuitively know what to do when they visit your website. They need to be told. It works. There is research somewhere to back this up, but for example, which one of the following links are more likely to be clicked:
- Click here to buy now
- Click here to buy now
If you are wondering, it is the first one. Click Here is clearer call to action. (and stop trying to click on the underlined phrases, they are not actual links!)
So we have a reason, a required action, and some form of a call to action. So for example, I want the visitors to my website to sign up to my email list, and my call to action will be placed in all the right places.
But How to Get the People to the Website
Good point. The information architecture of your website is so important – and unfortunately so neglected – that I though it’d be better if at least you have the above few things in place, in one form or the other.
It is not about being famous, it is about being effective. Some people generate more business with a few hundred people coming to their website, than people with hundreds of thousands of people coming to their websites. The difference is the information architecture.
